India Notches Spaceflight Milestone with Successful Launch of EOS-05 Satellite

India achieved a significant milestone in its space exploration efforts on September 3, 2026, with the successful launch of the EOS-05 Earth-imaging satellite. The GSLV Mark II rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 5:25 p.m. EDT (2:55 a.m. IST on September 4), marking a first for the country in deploying an Earth-observing satellite to geosynchronous orbit.

Approximately 18 minutes after launch, the GSLV successfully placed the EOS-05 satellite into sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit. This accomplishment represents India’s first successful deployment of an Earth-observing satellite to this orbit, a feat not achieved in previous attempts.

The GSLV Mark II, a three-stage rocket standing 170 feet (52 meters) tall, has been operational since 2010, completing 13 flights to date with 11 successes. The satellite, weighing 5,218 pounds (2,367 kilograms), is designed to observe the Earth from a high altitude, providing valuable data for various applications.

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), EOS-05 is characterized as a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft and is the first of its kind for India to operate from geosynchronous orbit. This orbit, positioned at approximately 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above the Earth, allows satellites to remain stationary relative to the planet’s surface, making it ideal for continuous monitoring of specific regions.

The satellite’s capabilities are expected to enhance monitoring of the Indian subcontinent, including remote border areas and strategic assets, as well as tracking severe weather and environmental events. These applications serve both civilian and military purposes, as noted by various sources.

This successful mission follows a previous attempt in August 2021, when the GSLV Mark II faced a failure that resulted in the loss of the EOS-03 satellite. The GSLV has since rebounded, achieving five consecutive successful launches since May 2023.

The EOS-05 launch marks India’s third orbital mission in 2026, following earlier missions that included a failed attempt to deliver 16 satellites in January and the successful private launch of the Vikram-1 rocket by Skyroot Aerospace.
